The city of Padang is one of the oldest city on the west coast of Sumatra in the Indian Ocean. According to historical sources in the beginning (before the 17th century) the city of Padang is inhabited by fishermen, farmers and traders salt. When that Padang has not so important because trade flows Minang people point to the east coast via the major rivers. But since the Straits of Malacca are no longer safe from the harsh trade competition by foreign nations and the many wars and piracy, the trade flows shift to the west coast of Sumatra Island.
Aceh was the first group of tribes that came after Malacca was conquered by the Portuguese at the end of century XVI. Since then Beach Tiku, Pariaman and Inderapura dominated by young kings became vice Pagaruyung important ports because of its position close to sources of commodities such as pepper, cloves, nutmeg and gold.
Then the Dutch came after Padang because of its estuary are nice and quite large and comfortable air and managed to prevail in the year 1660 through an agreement with the kings of young representatives from Pagaruyung. In 1667 to make Loji that serves as a warehouse once occupied the barracks and the surrounding area also for security reasons.

peak Pauh community upheaval and Koto Tangah against the Dutch with the Dutch master Loji-Loji in Muaro, Padang. The event was immortalized as the year of birth city of Padang.
May 20, 1784
Netherlands set the Padang as the center position and trade in West Sumatra. Padang become more crowded after the Gulf Harbour Bayur.
December 31, 1799.
The whole power of the Dutch East India Company was taken over by the government to establish the colonial government and used as the center position Padang resident.
March 1, 1906.
Born ordinance establishing a local Padang Cremente (STAL 1906 No.151) effective 1 April 1906.
March 9, 1950.
Padang is returned into the hands of Indonesia which is the state of the SK. President of Indonesia (RIS), No.111 dated March 9, 1950.
August 15, 1950.
SK. Governor of Central Sumatra No. 65/GP-50, dated August 15, 1950 set the Government of Padang as an autonomous region while waiting for establishment in accordance with Law No. 225 in 1948. At that time expanded the city of Padang, Padang kewedanaan deleted and moved his business to the Mayor of Padang.
May 29, 1958.
SK. Governor of West Sumatra No. 1/g/PD/1958, dated 29 Mai 1958, de facto, set the city of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province.

The de jure became the capital of West Sumatra Padang, which was marked by the release of Law No. 5 of 1974 on the Principles of Regional Administration, the Municipality of Padang made autonomous regions and administrative areas headed by a Mayor
