Candi Dieng is a collection of temples situated in the foothills Dieng Wonosobo,Central Java. Candi Dieng plateau region occupies at an altitude of 2000 m abovesea level, extending north-south direction is about 1900 m with a width of 800 m.
Collection wing Hindu Shiva temple which is expected to be built between the late 8th century to the early 9th century is believed to be the oldest temple in Java. Until nowhas not found written information about the history of Candi Dieng, but expertsestimate that the collection of this temple was built on the orders of the kings of theHouse of Sanjaya. In Dieng area was discovered an inscription framed in 808 AD,which is the oldest inscription reads ancient Javanese script, which is still there today.A statue of Shiva are found in this region are now stored at the National Museum inJakarta. Dieng Temple Construction is expected to take place in two stages. The firstphase took place between the end of the 7th century until the first quarter of the 8th century, includes the construction of temple Arjuna, Candi Semar, Temple andTemple Gatutkaca Heroine. The second stage is a continuation of the first phase,which lasted till about the year 780 AD
Dieng temple was first discovered back in 1814. At that time a British soldier whowas traveling to the area of Dieng see a collection of temples submerged in a pool oflake water. In 1956, Van Kinsbergen led the drying lake where a collection of templesis located. Cleanup efforts followed by the Dutch in 1864, followed by recording andtaking pictures by Van Kinsbergen.
